A group of Rotarians and friends were welcomed to a Leeds North Foodbank at Moortown Methodist Church by Karen Burgon, the Project Leader, on the 3rd February 2014. Karen outlined how the centre was currently operating with a team of 7 volunteers. After a question and answer session we were able to view the ‘Warehouse’ and the social area where clients could have a cup of tea/coffee and discuss both their food needs, and perhaps when appropriate, receive advice as to any other problem issues they may have. Karen explained how there were plans to open additional outlets in Horsforth and possibly Holt Park, which would certainly require Leeds North to acquire further premises to serve as a central warehouse, thus relieving the cramped conditions at Moortown. We were able to see examples of the ‘referral vouchers’ being issued to clients and appreciated the need for sensitivity in dealing with clients, not all of whom
wished to be seen to be using a Foodbank. Leeds North serving a sector bounded by the A65 and the A58, is one of four Foodbanks in the City, each of which have, or will have, a number of outlets in constituent neighbourhoods.
