St Mary’s Youth Theatre in Garforth, Leeds are currently rehearsing for a huge concert to raise funds for Candlelighters, the charity that supports children with cancer and their families across Yorkshire. The concert is on Saturday 17th March at The Great Hall, University of Leeds from 2:30pm – 4.45 including refreshment break.
St Mary’s Youth Theatre is a registered charity which started 25 years ago in Garforth to give the youth of the Community somewhere to go and keep them out of trouble.
As this is their silver anniversary, they will be singing songs from every past production including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Miserables, Rent, We Will Rock You and from their most recent production Disney’s Camp Rock.
Their members range from 8 to 18 years old including soloists Jessica Northam, Sam Dorsman, Molly Bollinger and Joe Broadhead who have all successfully auditioned for this concert. Many past members have gone on to study musical theatre or drama at university or appear professionally in musicals. One past member even appeared in the recent film Les Miserables.
The director and producer is Stephen Archdale, who has run St Mary’s Youth Theatre since its inception, tirelessly volunteering to direct and produce the theatre’s annual production and concerts.
The concert is a joint collaboration between Headingley Rotary Club who are sponsoring the event, St Mary’s Youth Theatre who are performing and the University of Leeds who are kindly providing the venue, as well as covering the cost of refreshments and the printing of the tickets. All profits will go to Candlelighters which is the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity this year. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr. Jane Dowson will be in attendance.
Jen Aspinall, Community Fundraiser for Candlelighters said: “We are delighted to have the support from everyone involved in the concert. The Great Hall at Leeds University holds 500 people so we are hoping it will be a huge success and raise a fantastic amount for Candlelighters. This will make a vast difference to families facing childhood cancer across Yorkshire.”
Tickets are now available, at £10 for adults and £5 for children under 12 years old, from the Candlelighters website www.candlelighters.org.uk or by contacting Christopher Walbank, Headingley Rotary on email@example.com or 0113 278 0094.
