The Foundation Committee organised a return visit to Leeds College’s Farthings Restaurant. Over £200 was raised in the raffle, towards the purchase of equipment for the Leeds Foodbanks.Over 50 members and friends gathered for a delightful meal produced and served by students at the College. And much to the delight of the Rhubarb Veterans, the desert course consisted of a trio of ‘Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb’ delicacies!
As a tribute to our guest speaker, Mrs Liz Holliday, headteacher at St Peter’s Primary School, we used the school prayer as our grace. After the meal Liz, spoke of her introduction to the school – when she had to close the school on her very first day because necessary work had not been completed. She had originally thought that her move to a headship would be to a charming little school in the country, and had never envisaged an inner city school in a relatively deprived area like Burmantofts. But the enormous reward of seeing children, often from ‘challenging’ backgrounds, some without English as their first language, grow into caring young people willing to learn were more than enough compensation for that now forgotten rustic idyll!
We greatly appreciated Liz’s after-dinner speech, which she concluded with a poem celebrating St Peter’s.
