David Oliver Brings Weardale to Headingley

Our Guest speaker and entertainer, David Oliver

David Oliver has the ability to bring all the joy and humour of Weardale folk and their music to any gathering. He certainly had the whole room laughing, tapping their feet and singing when he entertained us at this year’s Charter Dinner on 23 October. David is no stranger to the Club and, a close friend of Ernest Kirkby, he entertained us at the 2009 Charter Dinner in the year of Ernest’s presidency.

President Iain Farquharson-Welsh welcomed former District Governor, Rod Walmsley and Margaret, fresh from organising the annual conference at Scarborough the weekend before, representing Assistant District Governor, Andrew Wilson, who was engaged at a similar celebration elsewhere. Mr Yorkshire himself and his wife, Keith and Chris Madeley, Jenny and Michael Jones, Stuart and Carolyn Jolly and Ian Butler honoured us with their presence. We were also delighted to see Mrs Beverley Kenny, MBE, who has had a long association with our Club and the University,

Many people commented that Sandmoor Golf Club excelled itself in providing a superlative dinner (beautifully succulent lamb or beef) and the great success of the event is perhaps best conveyed by the photographs. What they cannot convey is the energy and joie de vivre of our guest speaker who made this year’s Charter Dinner into such a fantastic evening. Thanks, David.
